I still remember my first day as an attorney. The thrill of going to court for a hearing on a case for another attorney who was sick, the echo of my oath as I was sworn into the Texas State Bar, and the firm handshake from my mentor congratulating me on the achievement. Fast forward 22 years and I found myself in a different setting entirely, delving into the intricacies of the human mind and the complexities of the heart as a psychotherapist. The journey from law to psychotherapy wasn’t easy or straightforward, but it has been one of the most rewarding and fulfilling transitions I’ve ever made.

Every journey begins with a moment of decision. For me, it was a moment of clarity, a sudden recognition that the work I had once found so stimulating — the research, the intellectual challenge of the law, the camaraderie and leadership within a team of corporate professionals — was no longer serving my higher purpose. I longed for something deeper, more meaningful. A chance to make a difference in the world, not just in legal terms, but in the realms of human emotion, behavior, and resilience. This led me back to school to study mental health, and ultimately to open my private practice as a psychotherapist.

Switching professions was not without its challenges. The most significant was the difficulty in reconciling my identity as a practicing attorney with my newfound passion for psychotherapy. The concept of transitioning from an attorney’s sharp, analytical mindset to a therapist’s empathetic, understanding approach was an easy one. It was leaving behind — in a sense — my identity as an attorney for over two decades that was hard to reconcile. But over time, I realized that I didn’t have to leave the lawyer in me behind, but rather, I could utilize those same unique skills like analytical and critical thinking and problem-solving, along with my past corpoate business experiences to enhance my effectiveness as a psychotherapist. 

And this has proven to be true. My background in law has proven invaluable in my therapy practice. The pressures, stress, and constant demand for high achievement that I encountered as a legal professional are common among my clients, especially those in executive roles or who own businesses. The toxic dynamics, challenging personalities, and complex power plays I’ve seen in corporate environments often mirror the interpersonal struggles that my clients face in their personal lives. By leveraging my legal background, I can help them navigate these challenges with greater clarity and confidence.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my transition has been the chance to integrate diverse theories and practices into my work as a therapist. My legal background has given me a unique perspective on client dynamics and problem-solving. Like attorneys, therapists also listen to their clients’ stories, sift through the details to identify key issues, and devise strategies to address these issues. This approach, combined with my dual emphasis on marriage, family, and couples counseling, my practice of systems theory, and my incorporation of mindfulness practices, makes my therapy sessions uniquely tailored and comprehensive.

Misconceptions about therapy, especially among professionals, often hinder people from seeking the help they need. Many believe that therapy is a sign of weakness or a last resort when things have gotten really bad. These misconceptions could not be further from the truth. Just as physical training is a proactive approach to maintaining and enhancing physical health, therapy is a proactive approach to maintaining and enhancing mental and emotional health. It’s not just about delving into past traumas or blaming parents for current struggles, but about empowering individuals to navigate their present challenges and build a happier, healthier future.

I have found that the shift from law to psychotherapy has not only changed the lives of my clients, but also my own. Therapy, like law, is about people, their stories, and their journey to find resolution and peace. As a therapist, I have found myself challenged, enlightened, and transformed alongside my clients. This mutual process of growth and discovery is what makes therapy such a unique and rewarding profession.

For professionals grappling with stress, burnout, or considering a career shift, I recommend therapy. Not only does it provide a safe space to process feelings, navigate challenges, and explore potential paths, but it also provides valuable insights into oneself that can guide personal and professional development.

Transitioning from law to psychotherapy has been an immense journey, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I understand the struggles, pressures, and expectations of the professional world, but also the immense potential for growth, transformation, and fulfillment. This unique blend of experiences, combined with my therapeutic approach, equips me to guide you on your own journey to greater mental health and personal fulfillment.
